Dinner with a view of Istanbul’s beautiful skyline and harbor.  Mezza.  Yum.

Our hosts, Can Malta, owner of Yogashala, and his excellent girlfriend, Sada.

We were jet lagged but happy.

Sada and Can ordered everything for us and it was a feast — humus, tomatoes, a huge plates of “weird weeds” as Can put it — and they were delicious — shrimp, fish, eggplant and more.

Here is the lovely Mey Elbi, OM yoga TT graduate. She took OM yoga TT 10 years ago and now is a full-time yoga teacher in Istanbul, which is her home. We miss her at OM but it has been great to spend the weekend with her and her students.

I know, I know, I know...it's so wrong what with that amazing Turkish coffee right here and all. But Sada took me here and I liked it. It was fun to see the Turkish Starbucks after so recently being in the Japanese Starbucks. Here they have huge sandwiches and big, fattening luscious desserts.

In 5th grade I did a report on Istanbul and I've been dreaming of coming to this magical place and to the Bosphorus, ever since. And you know what? It is magical, indeed.

When I saw these workers outside the cathedral I got the sense that this has been going on for hundreds of year. Since the 1400s when the place was built there have always been workers here doing rebuilding, maintenance, restoration.

Street food -- chestnuts and roasted corn. Also, a traditional drink called Salep which, I think, is barley and honey and I don't know what else. David thought it was too sweet. I loved it and found it comforting, sort of like liquid oatmeal.

This is a real working mosque. Visitors are kept on the edge and inside are real worshippers. It is huge and beautiful and peaceful. I wore a scarf and if ladies are in short skirts, they must wrap a cloth around their waist to cover their legs.

the Hammam! The famous Turkish baths. We were vigorously scrubbed, soaped up and shampooed. Them nicely oil massaged and showered, emerging soft and fresh like babies. I love the raw cotton scarves they wrapped us up in and the olive oil soap. This Hammam has been here since 1584.

Then we visited the Yogashala Teacher Training anatomy class taught by Ken the Rolfer from New Jersey by way of Goa. He knows his stuff, for sure. Here he is demonstrating the rotation available in one of the students who is super flexy and Can, the owner of Yogashala who has a torn meniscus.

OM yoga Laboratory in Tokyo

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

So much going on all at once.  Some groups were still practicing for teaching their final class and some were working on their sutra presentations and some did teach.  It’s all happening all at once in this room — it is the OM yoga laboratory!

OM yoga at Lululemon

Monday, March 1st, 2010

OM yoga was the studio of the month at NYC’s Union Square Lululemon and it was fun!

l1030170Here is Sarah, me and Margi.  They were so nice to come to the class I taught to support me and OM.  I had just returned to NYC from Costa Rica and I was in a daze of coldness but somehow there I was.  They asked me if I would teach a class for them on the Presidents Day holiday at 8am!  Of course, I said yes — if it could be at 11.  We settled on 10am and they even opened the store late to accommodate the class.   So that was super nice and I tried my best to do a good job.

Here were the wonderful yogis and yoginis at the class!

OM yoga from Japan to NYC

I was so delighted to have some surprise visitors this week in my classes!

Leroy and I are a sandwich between Naomi and Kyoko. They are OM yoga teacher training students in my program in Tokyo. They are here at the OM yoga mothership and are taking 2-5 classes a day! Strong girls! What a treat to see them and share practice together at OM yoga NYC,

Another delightful surprise -- Lizzie Lasater! She is the daughter of my dear friend and beloved yoga teacher, Judith Hanson Lasater. Lizzie is finishing up her last semester in architecture at Columbia and popped in for a class between returning from a month in India and going back to school. She said she needed some good grounding and knew she could get that at OM yoga!

Kripalu

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

Dave and I are back at Kripalu for our annual November Yoga Body Buddha Mind weekend.  Wouldn’t you think that we would get sick of teaching this material?  Well, we don’t!  It is different every time because the group is different every time and we are different every time.  rsz_l10205241There are so many open hearted, curious, smart people with us this weekend and a large percentage of them are experienced yogis and experienced meditators.  Ten years ago it would have been the opposite percentage.  Pretty cool to see how much yoga and meditation has infiltrated our culture.

With a big group you just have to get up on the little platform thing so everybody can see you but I am always afraid I will fall off! Maybe some yoga teachers are more stationary than me, but my sequencing is spatially oriented and there is not enough room on this box. Whatever. It works okay for baddhakonasana.

It was delicious to hang out with our hosts, getting to know them better and eating North Carolinian Mexican food.  Yum!

Lisa, Nudgie, me, Shelton and Debbie. We all shared our backgrounds which were vastly different. Amazing -- yoga brings us all together!

Ardha Uttanasana aka Uttanasana 2

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Flat back, flat back, flat back….There is confusion floating around regarding this asana.  We stopped calling it flat back for a while and called it the pose formerly known as flat back but, for obvious reasons in the category of cumbersome, we reverted back to FB.  It is great that so many people have learned to use props and to place their hands on blocks for this pose, but these days I’m feeling like people are using props too much, often as a crutch or a comfort zone, rather than a needed support.  It’s a fine line, for sure.  But it is okay to feel in yoga, to feel an opening, lengthening, movement of energy.  And FB does not mean spine parallel to the floor. THIS IS A KEY POINT!  It means spine lengthened in two diretions — out through the crown of the head and back through the tailbone — so that there is space between the ribs and hips.  That is one of the reasons it is a set up for Chadarunga but that’s another lesson.

Other than being a butt shot (sorry about that, this is pretty good example of Ardha Uttanasana. My fingers are on the ground, like a spider. Fingers in line with toe tips. Yes, you can move them forward while you are learning but this is where you are going.

Or like this. If you don't have blocks, you can do it like this. I had them do this if they couldn't straighten their legs because we were working on jumping directly into chadarunga.

Yoga Body Buddha Mind — NC

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Last weekend at Blue Point Yoga in Durham, NC — what fun!  It is third annual OM yoga teacher training program and each year the students get better and better.  I have to think it has something to do with the fact that many of the Blue Point teachers are now OM yoga trained and are teaching OM yoga classes right there at Blue Point.  Anyway, the southerners really know how to host people and we had a lovely time.
