Winter wonderland

We decided to go for a walk yesterday.  Not a big undertaking, just up and down our street.

This is our street.

New Year’s Eve

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

We happily blobbed out for several days.  Then, it was New Year’s Eve and so we decided to have a quiet evening together at the 1770 House.  Yes, it is really that old and so naturally totally charming.  Three fireplaces and it’s right across the street from the pond with the floating tree in it.  The whole town has lit up trees, lit up windmills — it’s like a fairyland and I LOVE IT!  My whole Christmas thing, which was a peak of joyfulness for me all my life, is fading fast.  Daddy is gone, Mom is different.  It’s just not there and it’s hard for me to let go of that and all those memories.  So I love being here where the spirit of it is so beautiful and strong.

Can you see that painting behind Dave? It is probably from 1770! Dave's head is pretty close to the ceiling, which looks like it still has the original cross beams.

A roaring fire -- so cozy.

We ate upstairs in the main dining room but we went down the spiral staircase to the old speakeasy where there is another roaring fire, a bar and lots of people, too. Very like going back in time.

Fifth Avenue on Christmas

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

After lunch we took Millie for a drive down Fifth Avenue so she could see the pretty lights and holiday windows and the huge Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center.  It was a beautiful, sunny, windy day.  I have never gone to Fifth Avenue on Christmas Day before and had no idea that it would be packed with zillions of tourists!  I didn’t get great pictures but here are a few to give you an idea of the vibe.

Millie models her new Christmas sweater. It is hard to see but it has lots of sparkles. We LOVE sparkles, at all times, if possible. The lady at J. Crew told me that Michele Obama has this same sweater and so it is super popular. I told Millie that but I don't think she was super impressed. Maybe, maybe not. Hard to say. But she loved getting the sweater so that was good!

Christmas Day

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

We took Millie out for a fantastic Christmas Day lunch at a cool restaurant in midtown called Rouge Tomate.  It is organic, local, healthy and at the same time, sexy and cool.  It is in the space that was once the Copa Cabana!  It was fun to be in the middle of New York City on Christmas Day.  Lots of tourists and upbeat, joyful energy.

Sometimes it is hard to have a conversation with Millie, so Nudgie plays with her and makes her laugh!

Reward…

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

for a hard day at the Social Security office.  We had dinner with our dear friends, Hilary White and Miles Johnstone.  Many OMmies will remember Hil.  She was the very first manager of OM yoga, even before we had a space. She and I used to sit in Barnes and Noble with our cappucinos and make plans for putting the studio together.  Over time she left the back office to become a beloved OM yoga teacher and then a few years ago, they moved their whole family to LA.  But they came back for a visit.  Miles is a cook extraordinaire so we picked a great restaurant — Hearth.

Cheers and Merry Christmas!

Liminality

Welcome to 2010.  Here are some pictures of the transition time with my family.

Leroy loves Millie and she loves her GrandDog.

Leroy loves Millie and she loves her GrandDog.

Since she moved to NY from Texas her insurance had to be changed.   Guess what?  I didn’t know that.  I am an ignoramus about insurance, and let’s face it, this is a big thing to tackle and insanely complicated to figure out.  Plus, my parents bought their insurance a long time ago and neither of them can explain to me what they have or what they were thinking.  So we had to take Millie to the social security office in midtown on Dec. 23 so she could literally make an X (she can’t really write her name anymore) on the line and have an address change.  Now her medicare and drug coverage can begin again.  It took nearly 4 hours to get that done. For one thing, the address for the SS office in midtown is listed incorrectly on line and in the phone book.  When we got there, it was an apartment building and the doorman handed me a slip of paper with the correct address.  That is a service he has put together himself since the address was changed NINE YEARS AGO but they’ve never corrected it.  He said at least ten people a day come there looking for the SS office.  Don’t get me started…..!!!!
